Art of Yoh Yoshinari Illustrations
Yoh Yoshinari is a Japanese animator who was in charge of drawing storyboards of some of animes from Gainax Studio, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fooly Cooly, and Aim for the Top2! And also he designed the robots from Gurren Lagann, and after he moved to Studio Trigger, he directed ‘Little Witch Academia’ and took charge in designing the characters from it, so he is very renowned for his significant careers as an animator. In comparison with his significant careers, he had published only one artbook, Dead Wood Designs, which is a doujinshi artbook, but he finally published his very first official artbook which contains artworks of works that he took part in.

The contents of this book mainly consist of illustrations from the commercial works that the author participated in. There are illustrations of each of works, and although the amount of illustrations differs from each of works, the Gurren Lagann part shows the largest amount of illustrations. Mentioning about the Other Works part, this part features one or three illustrations from each of works. The Rough Sketches part mainly covers sketches of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann. It also shows some sketches of Valkyrie Profile, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Little Witch Academia.
Concluding the Review
Today I’ve reviewed the Art of Yoh Yoshinari Illustrations. Since this book is the author’s very first official artbook, this book mainly contains illustrations from the commercial works that he did participate in. It’s a shame that this artbook only features the illustrations from the works, not the author’s personal artworks, and the price of it is pretty expensive compared with the amount of pages of it. Therefore, if you are not a fan of the author or a collector, this book might not be worth as a good reference because of its expensive price.
