The Review of ART OF ZERO

ART OF ZERO

Art of Zero is an artbook, produced by four Korean artists, EHOTO, RAINMAN, Lee Young-hoon, and Kim Jin-hoon. This artbook contains concept arts based on the Zero, a fictional world, and it took fourteen months to complete this artbook.

Standard Book Size

Art of Zero is a paperback book. It has 224 pages, and the size of it is 22.5 x 30 x 2cm.

Language & Table of Contents

It was written in Korean, but comments about the Introduction chapter, the Interview chapter, the Synopsis chapter, and the Tutorial chapter were written in both Korean and English. There won’t be a problem with reading this book because of different languages, except some explanations about the settings of Zero. The table of contents consists of eleven chapters, Introduction, Interview, Synopsis, Illustration, Human, Other, Question, Logo & Symbol, Tutorial, Outro, and Special Guest Interview, and the main contents of this artbook are mainly contained in these six chapters, Introduction, Human, Other, Question, Logo & Symbol, and Tutorial.

Illustration

This chapter features 16-page illustrations. There are illustrations of characters, backgrounds, and other illustrations which show both characters and backgrounds at the same time.

Human, Other, Question

There are three different races in the Zero, Human, Other, and Question. There are concept arts of backgrounds, characters, and weapons of each race in those three chapters. The Question chapter comprises most pages of the three chapters, followed by the Human chapter and the Other chapter. Explaining about the quantities of illustrations according to the three categories in more detail, the illustrations of backgrounds and architectures comprise the largest part of three categories, followed by characters and weapons.

Logo & Symbol

This chapter contains 6-page concept designs of main logos of Zero and symbol marks of each of races.

Tutorial

This chapter features the drawing processes of the artworks in this book with six illustrations; there are three illustrations of backgrounds and the other three illustrations of characters. There are comments, which explain about each step of drawing processes of each of six illustrations, written in both Korean and English.

Special Guest Interview

There is information about five special guests, who are artists, in this chapter, and there are profiles, interviews about the Zero, and personal artworks of each of five artists.

Concluding the review

Today I’ve reviewed the Art of Zero. Although this artbook contains the concept arts based on the fictional world, Zero, but it gives the readers the feeling that they read a game concept artbook. There are many interesting contents in this book, but the main attractions in this book are the concept arts of backgrounds and architectures of each of the three races. The artworks in this artbook might be good references for artists, who work in the field of background arts or game concept arts. And also this artbook is pretty meaningful since it contains the artworks, which are not only the fruits of the four Korean artists’ effort but also tell us their ways of drawing arts.

Note: Any comments about the grammatical errors, or any other minor errors in the reviews will be welcomed.
