The Review of THE DAILY ZOO volume one by Chris Ayers

THE DAILY ZOO volume one by Chris Ayers

The Daily Zoon Volume One is an artbook, which contains the caricatures of animals, drawn by Chris Ayers while he had been battling leukemia. So far, three volumes of the series have been released, and today I’m going to review the first volume of the series.

Standard Book Size

The Daily Zoon Volume One is a paperback book. It has 159 pages, and the size of it is 20.5 x 20.4 x 1.6cm.

Language & Contents

It was written in English. Since this book contains not only the artworks but also the stories, which explain the chronicle of a struggle with the disease, reading those stories will help you to understand the circumstance of author back then. The contents are divided into three categories. First category covers the artworks and the stories created by the author for one year, and the second category shows the same artworks of the first category, contained in calendar forms, and the last category is an epilogue.

Artworks From April Through March

This category features the total of three hundred and sixty-five artworks from April to March in order. In accordance with the factors with the artworks, some of pages contain one or two artworks, and the artworks consist of color artworks, pencil arts, and monochrome artworks. Although the title of the book is Daily Zoo, there are artworks of bird, insects and reptiles, and the artworks were basically drawn in a cartoon style. Most of the artworks just feature the characters, but some of the artworks feature not only the characters but also some specific situations. Since there are several interesting factors in this book, you can enjoy the artworks pleasantly without reading the stories.

Volume One: Year in Review

This category shows the artworks drawn by the author from one day to three hundred and sixty-five days in order of months. That’s why total of twenty-one artworks separately are being contained in the calendar forms based on days of the week written at the top of the every two pages. At the bottom of the each of artworks, there are three things written in small size, ‘title’, ‘numbering’ (in sequence of dates), and ‘place’ (where he drew the artworks). So, there are some new artworks, which were not included in the first category. However, since the composition of this category is as simple as an index, the size of the artworks is small, so that’s a shame.

Concluding the review

Today I’ve reviewed The Daily Zoo Volume One. I was really impressed that the author drew plenty of charming cartoon style artworks of animals while he had the struggle with the terrible disease. This book might really be helpful to people who want to draw cartoon style artworks of animals and learn the author’s drawing techniques.
