The Review of The Art of Dragon Nest 龙之谷官方设定原画集

The Art of Dragon Nest
龙之谷官方设定原画集

The Art of Dragon Nest is a concept art book containing the contents of Korean MMORPG ‘Dragon Nest’. The game was developed by ‘Eyedentity Games’. The thing is that this game was developed and is currently being hosted in Korea first, but the art book of it was published only in Chinese. In addition, there isn’t any news about publishing it in Korean.

Standard Book Size

The Art of Dragon Nest is a paperback book. It has 181 pages, and the size of it is 21.2 x 28.6 x 2 cm.

Language & Contents

Although, it was written in Chinese, you don’t need to worry about reading the book, since there are only a few explanations in the book. The table of list consists of BACKGRAUND, PROFESSION, MONSTER, SCENE, and, ARTS.

BACKGRAUND

This chapter features about the world setting of Dragon Nest briefly, and also it covers the story, map of world, and several NPCs in a few pages.

PROFESSION

This chapter features the professions(classes) of players of Dragon Nest. There are images of normal players and promoted players of each of professions. There are explanations about the types of class promotion. Each of images is included in one page for each, so you can enjoy a large size of images. There are only 2D images, and the game images are not included in this chapter.

MONSTER

This chapter covers the monsters of the game, and this chapter comprises the most of the pages of the book. There are also only 2D images in this chapter. You can see the two designs of each of monster, ‘front of the monster’ and ‘side of the monster’. Some of monsters only have one design.

SCENE

This chapter features the backgrounds of the game. You can enjoy 2D images of backgrounds, buildings, and detailed designs of buildings. There are mainly concept arts rather than the complete images.

ARTS

This chapter shows the concept arts of the game. There are concept arts of costumes and NPCs. You can enjoy the concept arts of costumes and concept arts in a few pages.

Concluding the review

So far, I’ve explained the art book of Dragon Nest. Since it’s a concept art book, it contains the plenty of concept arts of the game, especially, the concept arts of monsters. It was a shame it didn’t feature the many concept arts of costumes and NPCs. If you want to see more concept arts of those, you can visit the official game website and find the concept arts of those. This art book is a good material for designing game characters, but it really was a shame it was published only in Chinese even though it contains the contents of Korean game. It’d be better if it had been published in Korean, too. Maybe the reason it was published in Chinese was because most of art books are not marketable in Korea. Most of Koreans don’t purchase the art books. In addition, people, who uploaded the art books they have on SNSs, got those art books as a free of charge by participating in events. Actually, there’s a similar case to Dragon Nest, the Korean game ‘Blade and Soul’. This game was also developed by Korean company, and is currently being hosted in Korea. However, the art book of it was also published in Chinese just like the Dragon Nest. Since there are immense number of game users in China, so they judged that it’d be more beneficial for them to publish the art book of Dragon Nest in Chinese than in Korean, since they host Dragon Nest not only in Korea, but also in China.
