The Review of James Bama: Sketchbook

James Bama: Sketchbook

James Bama: Sketchbook is a book containing sketches of American artist, ’James Bama’. He’s famous for his artworks, which focus on spaghetti western and Native American. However, unlike the circumstance that he is famous throughout many foreign countries, many Koreans don’t even know his name since the field of art in Korea is really poor.

Standard Book Size

James Bama: Sketchbook is a paperback book. It has 144 pages, and the size of it is 21.6 x 28 x 1 cm.

Language & Contents

It was written in English, and there are many explanations about sketches. Mentioning about the explanations, those are the stories of sketches, so you might need to read those to understand the sketches. The table of contents consists of fourteen parts including an introduction, ‘The Journey’, ‘Youth and Student Works’, ‘Illustrations’, ‘Native Americans’, ‘Buffalo and Horses’, ‘Western Subjects’, ‘Scenery’, ‘China and Hong Kong’, ‘Tibetans’, ‘Japan’, ‘Turkey and Greece, ‘Mexico’, and ‘Morocco’.

Components

Since the table of contents of the book consists of the regions that the author had visited, and there’s no certain classification of the artworks, so I’ll just review the book without sorting the artworks into categories.  The artworks of this book consist of pencil drawings, dessin drawings, paintings, and tempera drawings. You can see the names of drawing materials, sizes, and dates of the artworks written next to the page numbers. FIY, not all of the artworks have explanations for each. Some of the explanations cover a few artworks at once. Mentioning about his artworks, there are some artworks, which were drawn when he was a student, and some other artworks, drawn during the period he has been a professional artist. You’ll mainly enjoy the artworks about spaghetti western and Native American. You’d understand more about his biography and his inspiration to draw arts, if you read this book after seeing plenty of his other artworks.

Concluding the review

Today I’ve reviewed the James Bama: Sketchbook. Since it contains his sketches, which feature his inspiration that comes from the seventy years of his journey starting from his childhood to his period of being as a professional artist, stories of sketches, and explanations about them, so I highly recommend you to enjoy his other complete artworks, and then read this book. However, if you just want to enjoy his simple artworks, then it’s okay just to buy this book.

Note: Any comments about the grammatical errors, or any other minor errors in the reviews will be welcomed.
