The Review of The Sky Longing For Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai

The Sky Longing For Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai

The Sky Longing For Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai is a background art book of Makoto Shinkai. He is well-known as an anime producer, who produced “Voices of a Distant Star”, “5 Centimeters Per Second”, and “The Garden of Words”. It was published in 2008, and it features the contents of some of animated movies, produced by Makoto Shinkai.

Standard Book Size

The Sky Longing For Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai is a paperback book. It has 165 pages, and the size of it is 26 x 19 x 1.4 cm.

Language & Table of List

It was written in Japanese. Since it’s a background art book, there are explanations about the background images, and names of them. At the latter part of the book, there are some images of making process of the movies, and interviews of ten staffs, so those are worth to be translated to read. The table of list consists of several chapters, but to put those simply, it starts with the explanations of the terms of the movies. After that, there are three main chapters, ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’, ‘The Place Promised in Our Early Days’, and ‘Voices of a Distant Star’. In the last chapter, there are background images, which were used for advertisements for the movies, some images of making process of the movies, and lastly the interviews of 10 staffs including Producer Makoto Shinkai.

5 Centimeters Per Second

This chapter features the contents of ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’, which was released in 2007, and this part comprises the most of the pages of the book. This chapter consists of 3 parts, and every background image is a completed image. There are scene numbers and names of each of background images. There are some comments about the movies. You can enjoy plenty of contents in this chapter, since this chapter has the most of the pages of the book.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days

This chapter covers the contents of ‘The Place Promised in Our Early Days’. As similar to the first chapter, there are scene numbers and names of each of images, and also there are some comments about the movie. However, this chapter comprises less than the half of the pages of first chapter.

Voices of a Distant Star

As the last main chapter, it features the contents of ‘Voices of a Distant Star’, which is the oldest animated movie of three movies featured in this book, since it was published in 2002. Just the same as the previous chapters, this chapter shows the background images, scene numbers and names of images, and comments about the movie. This chapter comprises the least pages of the three chapters.

Making Process of Advertisements for Movies, and Interviews

This chapter features the images of advertisements for movies in two pages, and also covers the making process of the movies with some cutscene images. Since there are some explanations of those images, and also there are interviews of staffs, so you might need to translate the explanations to understand those images, and the interviews.

Concluding the review

The most attractive feature of this art book is it contains the backgrounds images of three animated movies of Producer Makoto Shinkai, images of making process of movies, and interviews in 165 pages of the book. However, it’d be better if the pages of each of three movies were similar, since ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’ chapter comprised 100 pages, while ‘The Place Promised in Our Early Days’ chapter comprised the 34 pages, and Voices in a Distant Star chapter comprised only 14 pages, so some people might be disappointed if they wanted to enjoy many images of those two movies. It was also shamed the size of the book was smaller than an A4 paper, so I couldn’t enjoy the backgrounds images in more detail, since the images were pretty small. Still, this art book, The Sky Longing For Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai might be worth to purchase, since it might be the only background art book that contains many backgrounds images of Producer Makoto Shinkai so far.
